Les Portes-en-Ré

The last village on the island, Les Portes is home to the Lilleau des Niges bird sanctuary. Here you can observe the many birds that reside there or that stop over during their migration.

Trousse-Chemise Wood, so beautifully sung by Charles Aznavour, takes its name from a local legend which says that at the time of the siege of La Rochelle, the defeated English re-embarked from the beach bordering the wood and the Rhétaises, to discourage them from coming back, pulled up their shirts under which they were not wearing breeches and showed their posteriors.
