Saint-Clément-des-Baleines

Known for its 3 lighthouses: Les Baleines Lighthouse, the Old Tower and the Baleineaux  Lighthouse at sea, Saint Clément is located at the tip of the island. The village is made up of 5 hamlets and takes its name from the whale strandings that have taken place on its shores in the past.

Don't let yourself be impressed by the 257 steps of the Les Baleines Lighthouse, the view from the platform, the most beautiful on the island, rewards the effort made to climb it. In very good weather, you can even see the bridge.

A little anecdote, in the 70s, a lighthouse keeper told visitors that in very, very good weather, you could see America. Close to the lighthouse, you will find the old lifeboat shelter. Since 2012, Saint Clément is the place where lobsters are reintroduced with the operation "Adopt a Lobster" set up by the Community of Communes of Ile de Ré.
