Sainte-Marie de Ré

Surrounded by vineyards, Sainte-Marie is popular with surfers, with its spot of Grenettes.

The remains of numerous fish locks line the wild beaches of Sainte Marie. True stone walls in the shape of a horseshoe, the locks were submerged by the water at high tide and when the sea withdrew through the gates, they trapped the fish, thus allowing the inhabitants to fish without taking to the sea.
